Understanding Legals-Only Weddings
If you’re thinking about tying the knot but want to keep things simple, stress-free, and all about the love - you’re in the right place! Today, I’m diving into the world of legals-only weddings. These are perfect for couples who want the legal part done without the fuss of a big event!
What Are Legals-Only Weddings?
Legals-only weddings are exactly what they sound like - a ceremony focused purely on the legal requirements to get married. No big party, no lengthy speeches, just the essentials to make your marriage official.
It’s quick, simple, and often more affordable than a traditional wedding.
These are popular for so many different scenarios - whether you are planning a big celebration later, or just want a private moment without any fuss.
Here’s what usually happens in a legals-only wedding:
Before the day
We’ll arrange a Zoom meeting to complete and lodge your Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM), which must be lodged at least one month before your wedding date.
I’ll send through my service agreement and invoice, and answer any questions you have along the way.
Before I can marry you, I’ll need to sight identification from each of you. This is generally either:
Your birth certificate and photo ID, or
Your passport.
If either of you has been married before, I’ll also need to sight evidence that the previous marriage has legally ended.
On the Day:
We’ll meet at our agreed location, ready to make things official.
I’ll speak with each of you individually to confirm that you’re entering the marriage freely and without coercion. You’ll then sign the Declaration of No Legal Impediment to Marriage, with me as your witness.
I’ll introduce myself as your authorised celebrant and say the Monitum, the legally required statement explaining the nature and significance of marriage under Australian law.
You’ll exchange your legal vows, with the option to include personal vows and a ring exchange if you’d like.
You, your two witnesses and I will sign the three marriage certificates.
I’ll submit your marriage registration when I get home.
And that’s it! All the legal formalities are taken care of, and you’re officially married!
Why Choose a Legals-Only Ceremony?
You might be wondering, “Why would anyone want to skip the big wedding party?” Well, there are plenty of reasons! Here are some of the top benefits:
Stress-Free: Planning a big wedding can be overwhelming. A legals-only ceremony cuts out the stress and lets you focus on each other.
Budget-Friendly: Weddings can get expensive fast. This option saves you money without sacrificing the significance of your vows.
Flexibility: You can have your legal ceremony now and plan a celebration later, or keep it simple forever.
Intimacy: It’s just you, your partner, two witnesses and the celebrant. No distractions, or pressure.
Quick and Easy: These ceremonies usually take about 5 minutes, perfect for busy couples.
Remember, this day is about you and your partner. Make it reflect your story and style!
Making Your Legals-Only Wedding Yours
Even though legals-only weddings are simple, they can still be packed with joy. Here are some tips to make your day unforgettable:
Dress Up or Dress Down: Wear what makes you feel amazing, whether it’s a gown, suit, or casual outfit. I have married a couple in their Pjs, as they were eating Coco Pops - and it was incredible! They had a friend deliver their "big" ceremony that afternoon, and spending the morning together and making it legal was such a special way to start their day!
Capture the Moment: Hire a photographer or ask a friend to snap some pics.
Celebrate Afterwards: Plan a special meal or outing to mark the occasion.
Write a Letter to Each Other: Exchange letters to read on your anniversary.
Keep It Fun: Add humour or personal stories to your vows to keep things light and joyful.
Write Your Own Vows: Share your feelings in your own words.
Choose a Special Location: Brisbane is full of beautiful spots - maybe a park, a beach, or even your backyard!
Play Your Favourite Song: Music sets the mood, even in a short ceremony.
